So I did a bit of research and decided to try and reformat the HDD myself.
I bought a SATA/USB case for the 250gb harddrive and connected it up to my computer.
Downloaded Swissnife and formated it to FAT32 and put it back into the PS3. I have also tried installing both 3.10 and 3.15 updates via DVD but they too freeze at 99%.
I thought it had worked as it began reformatting it and installing the update I had on USB until it reached 99% again and froze..... I think the problem lies within the PS3 itself and not the HDD Any help is appreciated.
Those who didn't install the v4.45 system update can get the new update the same way as ever.
For those who did apply v4.45, and ended up being unable to reach the XMB on the console, here are the instructions on how to fix your console.
The console is still running fine and I can the frozen install at any time. I have tried deleting the game data and starting from the beginning with no luck. Note: Other materials, such as a paper towel or a T-shirt, may also scratch the Disc.
When launching the game it says it needs to update, which completes successfully. Also, do not use or insert any CD/DVD drive cleaners into the Playstation 3 as doing so may cause damage to the system. If the game Disc does not work in another system, this is a good indicator that the Disc is damaged or defective.Perhaps there's been a power cut; maybe there isn't adequate space available on your Mac (we always recommend that you don't install with less than 10GB free or your Mac may struggle with the installation); maybe there are other problems with your Mac - it's worth running Disk Utility (you'll find it in Applications Utilities) prior to updating just in case. It's always wise to run through a standard series of checks before you perform an operating system update on a Mac.To acquire a replacement game Disc you will want to refer to your manual for warranty information specific to your product.
